San Ramón is a rural county in the mountainous highlands of north-central Nicaragua. Located in the Department of Matagalpa, San Ramón is home to about 37,000 people. Most depend on subsistence farming and income from day labor on coffee plantations to survive. The combined impacts of extreme poverty and limited road infrastructure result in very limited access to basic services.
The people of Nicaragua have survived foreign occupation, military dictatorships, ten years of civil war (for more information on US involvement aiding the Contras during the Sandinista Revolution, read this summary at ViaNica), devastating natural disasters and, more recently, the effects of climate change.
